For cryin’ out loud!

Do you agree – there’s a world of tech tips for recording ‘normal’ voice, but not so much for handling the extremes of cartoon work. For example, whispering comes out better if recorded quite well back from the mic. That’s counter-intuitive, but generally true.
At the other end of the scale, shouting invites a step back – and it may better match the scene perspective. But what if the image is of a frame-filling mouth and the client needs an in-yer-face bawl?

Maybe you will get in close, having turned down the channel gain. I did that this morning, but still got caught out with input overload. Yes, quite so, that’s why mics have a ‘pad’ switch to take off the heat. Actually, mine does not – so I got a dirty protest from the preamp, and had to back off.

Decisions, decisions: new mic, in-line attenuator, boutique pre-amp?
